This headline story broke in June when Apple announced it was going to use Yelp.com’s Reviews in their new “Apple Maps” application coming out this fall…
Is Apples new “Alliance” with Yelp a Big Deal?
[hilight color="FFFF00"]YES – especially when you factor in the other Major Players that are in the mix.[/hilight] Normally, anyone ONE entity challenging Google would be laughed out of a conversation; however, CONSIDER THIS…
This are Four LARGE players joining forces to duke it out with Google. Who are they? [hilight color="FFFF00"]Apple, Yelp, Bing and FACEBOOK.[/hilight]
Who Should Really Pay Attention?
Local Business Owners! Most Businesses are optimizing for Google ONLY — and these new “Alliances” that are forming could easily take customers away from Google. Businesses that are dependent on Google ONLY – could lose a substantial amount of Traffic. More users are likely going to be using Apple’s new “Maps” … so Local businesses better make sure they are showing up on this new platform.
Here’s the Scoop:
Apple announced in June it was partnering with Yelp.com to compete with Google for Local Search. Apple is schedule to release “Apple Maps” shortly – and will most likely be removing Google Maps from it’s product line shortly afterwards. This is a big deal because of Google’s dominance over Local Search has gone almost unchallenged - until now. Apple and Yelp together is a decent opponent… add Bing and Facebook into the equation and there is a HUGE ALLIANCE forming to ultimately compete with Google.
Why is this such a Big Deal for Local Businesses? Google has been the 800 pound Gorilla for so long that most people that have put together an online marketing plan to take advantage of Local Search are 100% invested into Google. These Alliances that are forming could potentially take Millions of Viewers away from Google. It is my personal opinion this is a good thing – Google has become very arrogant over the past 5 years – HOWEVER, [hilight color="FFFF00"]very few businesses are “optimized” for anything other than Google.[/hilight]
So What Should Local Businesses Do?
It would be very wise to watch these Alliances over the next few months. I would also suggest to start building plan to generate reviews on YELP.com if you have been 100% Google Oriented. Start optimizing your business on Bing.com – especially in their “Local Business” Section.
THE BOTTOM LINE — Start Diversifying your optimization efforts IMMEDIATELY. Google is still the 800 Pound Gorilla; however, the alliances that are forming WILL cost Google some market share. That means your customers will be using other sources to look for your products and services — so make sure you stay in front of them - [hilight color="FFFF00"] Diversify your Optimization.[/hilight]
